Sailing tour aboard the Eastern Star
The 48 ft. wooden ketch is a majestic vessel, a tall ship which under full sail can be easily identified among the fleet of fishing trawlers that dot the Lunenburg waterfront. The 90 min. day cruise begins at the Lunenburg waterfront, a bustling section of the old town comprised of well-kept Georgian homes, cozy restaurants, and unique shops. It is this picturesque, well-preserved part of Lunenburg that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lunenburg Bay is beautiful with the brightly painted buildings of the old town providing the perfect backdrop. There are lighthouses to photograph and porpoises and seals on hand to entertain the passengers and crew. You will sail past the old Smith and Ruland Shipyard, birthplace of the Bluenose, Canada’s legendary racing schooner. Further down the coast the crew will tack close to a group of large factory ships from the Lunenburg scallop fleet and sail past the second largest fish processing plant in the world.
The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic
The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic celebrates the rich history of Canada’s North Atlantic fishery. Gallery after gallery unfolds the truths of our rich and diverse fishing heritage that is heavily entwined with our coastal way of life. Hear stories of the Mi’kmaq Fishery, Inshore Fishery, the Banks Fishery and the resulting spin-off industries. Located in a former fish processing plant on the Lunenburg waterfront. Dockside there are in-water ship displays including the side trawler Cape Sable and the Theresa E. Connor, Canada’s oldest salt bank schooner. The real gems of this museum are the passionate, knowledgeable, and accessible Interpreters who bring these stories to life.
